Visual impairment in the elderly as a risk factor for sarcopenic obesity

Abstract

Visual impairment significantly reduces physical activity in elderly patients, which significantly contributes to the development of sarcopenic obesity. However, visual impairment has not previously been considered as a risk factor for sarcopenic obesity. Purpose: to study the association of visual impairment with sarcopenic obesity. Material and methods. The prevalence of sarcopenic obesity was studied among 315 elderly patients with primary glaucoma and cataracts, diagnosed according to national criteria through a comprehensive ophthalmological examination. Sarcopenic obesity was identified based on recommendations proposed by the European Working Group on sarcopenia in older people (EWGSOP2, 2018). Results. The prevalence of sarcopenic obesity varied depending on the uncorrected visual acuity in the worse eye, with a maximum of 59.37 ± 3.18 % of cases with uncorrected visual acuity of 0.20–0.30. A high prevalence of sarcopenic obesity in patients with primary glaucoma and cataract was also revealed with uncorrected visual acuity of 0.31–0.40, amounting to 22.85 ± 2.06 % of cases, which is 2.59 times lower than with visual acuity of 0.20–0.30. A low and almost equivalent prevalence of sarcopenic obesity was found among those examined with visual acuity without correction of 0,41–0,50 and 0,51–0,60. Factor analysis confirmed a high and reliable association sarcopenic obesity only with visual acuity without correction in the worst eye of 0,20–0,30 and 0,31–0,40. Conclusion. Visual impairment is a significant risk factor for sarcopenic obesity.
